Hyvinkää is about 55 km north of Helsinki, with commuter trains to the capital taking roughly an hour. It has a railway museum, a hospital and a sizeable industrial history. Nearby towns include Nurmijärvi, Järvenpää, Tuusula and Kerava, with Vantaa closer to Helsinki and Hämeenlinna to the north.
For Helsinki workers, Hyvinkää means a long commute in exchange for a flat that costs a fraction of city prices.
Most flats in Hyvinkää belong to a housing company (asunto-osakeyhtiö), meaning you buy shares rather than a title to the apartment. Check the company's renovation plans, such as pipe replacements or facade work, which can lead to large charges. Many blocks date from the 1960s to 1980s, and newer flats cluster around the centre and railway station. Detached homes tend to sit on the edges of town with larger plots and forest access.
Transfer tax is 1.5% on housing-company shares (most apartments) and 3% on real property such as a plot or detached house. Apartments usually come with monthly maintenance charges and sometimes a share of the building's loan, so ask for the housing company's financial statements. Non-EU/EEA buyers may need a Ministry of Defence permit for real property. See our Finland buying guide, financing guide and Finland overview.
