Apartments: 332. Houses: 73. Bedrooms: 142 two-bedroom, 115 one-bedroom, 105 three-bedroom, 29 four-bedroom, 12 five-plus. Small flats suit students, retirees and investors; see Finland's apartment and house pages for context.
The market is mostly resale, in post-war blocks and older stone buildings, with newer districts along the Aura River.
Turku is a university and port city on the southwest coast, with ferries to Sweden and Åland, a castle, a cathedral and a busy riverside. The archipelago nearby offers summer cottages. Helsinki is about two hours by rail.
Nearby alternatives include Raisio and Kaarina (suburban, family homes), Salo, Lohja, Rauma (a wooden old town) and Pori.
In an apartment block you buy shares in a housing company (asunto-osakeyhtiö), which gives you the right to a flat. Transfer tax is 1.5% on housing-company shares and 3% on real estate such as a detached house on its own plot. Check the company's financial statements, renovation plan and loans; monthly charges (yhtiövastike) can be large. Non-EU buyers may need permission from the defence ministry to buy real estate (not housing-company shares), so get advice on houses.
